On the Relation between Realizable and Nonrealizable Cases of the Sequence Prediction Problem
نویسنده
چکیده
A sequence x1, . . . , xn, . . . of discrete-valued observations is generated according to some unknown probabilistic law (measure) μ. After observing each outcome, it is required to give the conditional probabilities of the next observation. The realizable case is when the measure μ belongs to an arbitrary but known class C of process measures. The non-realizable case is when μ is completely arbitrary, but the prediction performance is measured with respect to a given set C of process measures. We are interested in the relations between these problems and between their solutions, as well as in characterizing the cases when a solution exists, and finding these solutions. We show that if the quality of prediction is measured by total variation distance, then these problems coincide, while if it is measured by expected average KL divergence, then they are different. For some of the formalizations we also show that when a solution exists, it can be obtained as a Bayes mixture over a countable subset of C. As an illustration to the general results obtained, we show that a solution to the non-realizable case of the sequence prediction problem exists for the set of all finite-memory processes, but does not exist for the set of all stationary processes. The framework is completely general: the processes measures considered are not required to be i.i.d., mixing, stationary, or to belong to any parametric family.

متن کاملAnalytical Prediction of Indentation and Low-Velocity Impact Responses of Fully Backed Composite Sandwich Plates
In this paper, static indentation and low velocity impact responses of a fully backed composite sandwich plate subjected to a rigid flat-ended cylindrical indenter/impactor are analytically investigated. The analysis is nonlinear due to nonlinear strain-displacement relation. In contrast to the existed analytical models for the indentation of composite sandwich plates, the stacking sequence of ...
متن کاملSeismic Data Forecasting: A Sequence Prediction or a Sequence Recognition Task
In this paper, we have tried to predict earthquake events in a cluster of seismic data on pacific ring of fire, using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The model is employed as either a predictor for a sequence prediction task, or a binary classifier for a sequence recognition problem, which could alternatively help to predict an event. Here, we explain that sequence prediction/r...
متن کاملAn Efficient Bi-objective Genetic Algorithm for the Single Batch-Processing Machine Scheduling Problem with Sequence Dependent Family Setup Time and Non-identical Job Sizes
This paper considers the problem of minimizing make-span and maximum tardiness simultaneously for scheduling jobs under non-identical job sizes, dynamic job arrivals, incompatible job families, and sequence-dependentfamily setup time on the single batch- processor, where split size of jobs is allowed between batches. At first, a new Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed for t...
متن کاملEnsemble Kernel Learning Model for Prediction of Time Series Based on the Support Vector Regression and Meta Heuristic Search
In this paper, a method for predicting time series is presented. Time series prediction is a process which predicted future system values based on information obtained from past and present data points. Time series prediction models are widely used in various fields of engineering, economics, etc. The main purpose of using different models for time series prediction is to make the forecast with...
